Some parents worry that if they teach their baby sign language he won't want to speak or it will delay his speech. That is simply not true. In fact, research suggests that signing babies talk earlier and build a vocabulary faster than non-signing babies. Also, children who sign as babies have an average of 50 more spoken words in their vocabulary than those who didn't learn to sign.

By learning to sign, not only will your baby be able to tell you her most basic needs, she will also have the ability to communicate things that interest her. For instance, my daughter loves animals. We sign them together when we go outside, read a book or visit the zoo. Many times she initiates the conversation by using her signs to point out things she sees. Without her ability to sign, I would miss the experience to share in her view of the world around her.
